Preserve the Past

Support The Giles County Virginia Historical Society with a Generous Donation!

The Giles County Historical Society has a mission to connect today's people with the people, events, and ways of life that have shaped our community's history, rather than just preserving the past. This mission is especially important during times like these, where stories of people who lived in our community and coped with hard times can provide comfort. Although the economic turmoil today has many differences from the Market Crash of 1929, connections between the past and present are still critical. Generous donations from members, businesses, and interested persons can help the Historical Society continue to make these connections and inspire our community. We urge you to consider making a donation to the Society to support its mission.

Donor-Restricted Gifts

Donor-restricted gifts are a crucial pillar of support for our organization. These generous contributions allow donors to direct their philanthropic intentions towards specific projects or programs that resonate with their passions and values. Whether it's bolstering the Barn Fund, enhancing the enchantment of our Christmas Open House, or addressing more focused needs like computer upgrades and library purchases, these earmarked gifts make a tangible impact on our mission. Periodically, the Society may issue calls for support for special purposes, enabling our community to rally around key initiatives that further our goals. We deeply appreciate the dedication and thoughtfulness of our donors, who play an instrumental role in shaping the success and growth of our endeavors.

David Johnston Memorial Sign

David Johnston immigrated to the New World in 1737; he settled in Culpeper County, Virginia, marrying Nancy Anne “Nannie” Abbott in 1751. During the Revolutionary War, he served as a private under Capt. Hardy Hills and Col. George Clark. In 1778, he relocated to Montgomery County, VA, now known as Giles County. Recognized as one of its earliest settlers, he built a cabin on the high plateau between Big and Little Stony Creek. With Nancy, he had eight children (James, David, Andrew, Sallie, Elian, Jeminma, Virginia, and Annie). He later served as the constable for the County. David Johnston’s legacy lives on at Phlegar Farm, where he now rests, but he is remembered with honor by his descendants at the Giles County Historical Society. Join us in honoring this American Revolutionary soldier by donating to the memorial sign.
